Elementary Program

Curriculum

Ethra School’s curriculum is based on a bilingual program with special emphasis on education in both English and Arabic languages. The curriculum features the best international standards while maintaining the value of the Saudi culture, heritage and native Arabic language.

The school follows the National Program of the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the American Common Core Standard curriculum which includes English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science.

Students are evaluated through several techniques including daily observation, performance tasks, continuous and cumulative assessments and academic progress level tests at the end of each semester.

We rely on a parallel language program through reading and writing workshops where the focus is on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills so that all students can learn, work and think in both languages.

English

Ethra School is following the U.S. curriculum with Common Core Standards (CCSS), and Science with NGSS standards.

The English Language Art (ELA) and Mathematics curriculums are aligned with the US Common Core Standards (CCSS), while the Science program is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). We provide teacher support so that classrooms can utilize all the features that Alpha’s programs have to offer.

We have adopted the following standards that serve as the foundation for building our curriculum and programs.

Language Art Program

Reading Street Language Art Program

Reading Street is an integrated and well-balanced approach to reading and writing instruction.

Reading Street Common Core inspires you, guides you, and prepares you to teach. Every lesson is finely tuned to teach the Common Core State Standards (CSSS).

Every lesson focuses on Common Core State Standards, moving children toward higher-order thinking and college and career readiness. Reading Street Common Core is more personalized, more interactive, and more responsive. It’s the first English language arts program to offer 100% compliance with the Common Core in print and digital formats.

Reading Street Common Core is built for performance and manageability. Weekly target skills and strategies perfectly align to the new grade-level standards.

Reading Street is unique by design to support any path and any pace of teaching. You lead the way with smart, efficient resources—complete with flexible pacing plans, precise monitoring, and robust digital content.
Reading Street is not just a reading program. It is billed as a resource for comprehensive coverage of language arts that covers all reading skills (phonics, fluency, and comprehension), vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and composition. All of these subject areas are integrated around themes, with six general themes per year. Themes are very general. For example, some first grade themes are “What is changing in our world?” and “How are people and animals important to one another?”

In first grade, it is evident that this program really does teach phonics even though it is not a beginning reading program. It assumes the student already knows how to blend and read some short words. The first story begins with, “I am Sam. Am I Sam?” The first two books primarily use short-vowel words along with some high-frequency sight words. Long-vowel words really start to appear in the third book.

The series continues to build a solid understanding of phonics, reviewing phonetic elements of words even through the upper levels. Spelling lists often include groups of words with common phonetic elements.

Reading selections, the backbone of the program, include fiction, fables, folktales, mythology, non-fiction, biography, and poetry. Some selections are by well-known authors. Brief biographical sketches and photos of authors follow each reading selection.

The entire program reflects the Common Core Standards, and because the standards require the use of “informational texts in a range of subjects,” a large number of the reading selections are from the areas of history and science.

They are beautifully illustrated in full color with illustrations that rival the best in children’s picture books.

At the front of each reader are visual handbooks that highlight key areas in reading skills and strategies that will be covered. Student books also include glossaries and or vocabulary handbooks, differing from book to book.

Lessons begin with a “Let’s talk about” introduction. For example, one first grade lesson begins with talking about growing and changing.. A few brief discussion points are provided, but it is really up the parent or teacher to lead this discussion. Skills or strategies are taught next followed by some work on phonics or vocabulary. Many reading selections have sidebars with questions that will help students to focus on story elements or that will help them to apply critical thinking skills. Readings are followed by critical thinking questions and the author’s biographical sketch.

The final section of each lesson—“Let’s Write It!”—provides composition instruction and writing prompts.

A grammar sidebar titled “Conventions” appears at the end of the writing lesso

Reading Street Common Core helps you prioritize instruction to support higher levels of reading and writing.
